The National People's Army (NVA) was established in 1956. Following the Second World War, Germany was divided into
two states, with East Germany becoming the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and part of the Soviet sphere of influence.
Like the armed forces of the other Warsaw Pact member states, the NVA was equipped primarily with Soviet military vehicles,
weapons and equipment. At the same time, it was able to rely on a strong domestic vehicle industry, particularly in the field of
military trucks. Iconic East German manufacturers such as Robur, IFA and Barkas became well known not only within the NVA
but also in the armed forces of other allied Warsaw Pact countries. Following German reunification in 1990, the majority of the
NVA's vehicles and equipment were retired from service or scrapped.
