The new world order established after the Second World War largely isolated the COMECON (Council for Mutual Economic
Assistance) countries from the West. As a result, the demand for agricultural machinery was met almost exclusively by tractors
manufactured within the Eastern Bloc. Most of these tractors were developed domestically, although in some cases
manufacturers chose to purchase production licences instead of investing years in engineering development and testing. A good
example is the Hungarian Rába-Steiger, produced in the city of Győr under licence and based on the American Steiger Cougar II
articulated heavy tractor. Today, many of these tractors have become iconic symbols of Eastern European agriculture. Their
