The Royal Hungarian Army:
Hungary emerged from the First World War on the losing side. Under the Treaty of Trianon (1920), the country lost
approximately two-thirds of its territory and was subjected to severe military restrictions. The domestic arms
industry was virtually dismantled, several branches of the armed forces were prohibited, and Hungary was not
permitted to maintain tanks or an air force. The strength of the army was limited to 35,000 personnel.
Under these conditions, the Royal Hungarian Army was established in 1922. Hungary regained military equality in
1938, making it possible to openly acquire military aircraft and tanks, although this proved increasingly difficult in
a Europe preparing for war. Initially, the backbone of the Royal Hungarian Air Force consisted of Italian aircraft.
From 1942 onwards, German aircraft types entered service, and under the German–Hungarian aircraft production
agreement, Hungary manufactured significant numbers of Messerschmitt Bf 109G and Me 210 Ca-1 fighter aircraft,
partly for the Luftwaffe. In the spring of 1945, the front swept across Hungary, and the last Hungarian combat units
laid down their arms in Austria. With the end of the Second World War, the Royal Hungarian Army ceased to exist.
